From Ron’s Desk

As you know I am leaving the day to day management of ZGS to become the President of the Telemundo Station Group. It was a unique opportunity for both ZGS and me to grow and strengthen our relationship with Telemundo. The past 25 years with ZGS have been stimulating, rewarding and most of all fun. It is incredible to see how far ZGS has come, and much of that is thanks to your efforts and commitment in the community and with our clients. Eduardo and I started with almost nothing and with your help and encouragement have built a tremendous company that continues to serve and make a difference in the Hispanic community. It is time to double up our efforts and bring the creativity and commitment that characterizes the growth and success of ZGS to our markets. I am excited to welcome the Telemundo affiliates in Fresno and San Antonio to the ZGS family. They represent an important step in the growth of our company. I want to thank my colleague and partner Eduardo Zavala for his friendship, counsel and support over the past 25 years. I am pleased that he will be teaming-up with Peter Housman who has been an invaluable advisor and colleague to lead our company. I am also very happy to welcome Julissa Marenco back to ZGS as President of the ZGS Station Group. She brings all the knowledge, experience and passion to be a wonderful leader. I know and trust that you will give them the same affection and support you have given me all these years. This is an exciting time for ZGS. The future of the company is extremely bright and I want to thank each and every one of you for your support over the years. With this, I turn over the newsletter column writing responsibilities to Eduardo. Mil gracias y pórtense bien!

Human Resources News

A note from Jackie Carrillo

With the summer internship season upon us, it’s a good time to think about utilizing students for summer internships. Interns are looking for meaningful experience that is related to their field of study, and a successful internship program for both parties occurs if you're willing to provide that. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
• Carefully consider the qualifications your interns should have for the available internship. It is important that they have the background for the duties that they are expected to perform. Specify whether an intern should have completed specific coursework or a certain number of years of college.
• Be aware of expenses. Although interns aren't usually as costly as regular employees, there are expenses involved. Recruiting can be costly, especially if you need to attend job fairs at various colleges.
• Be aware of the legalities. Most interns qualify as employees under various employment laws and are subject to minimum wage and overtime laws, workers' compensation coverage and possibly unemployment compensation. Please consult Human Resources prior to hiring for additional details.
• Ensure ahead of time that office supplies, computer access and workspaces are available.
• Plan for time to supervise your interns. An intern is no solution to your work overload if you don't have the time and energy to oversee the work that a successful internship requires. This includes providing ongoing feedback and conducting a formal performance review.
• Ask your HR Manager for ongoing support. It's important that the HR Manager be involved with interns who have encountered problems and for managers who are handling issues with interns.
